Reduce Website Spam score with Google disavow links: process to reduce the spam score of a website with google disavow tool, get complete guide.
Good backlinks help a site rank higher. Bad backlinks can cause problems. you’ve got only limited control over which links point to your site.
Google’s Disavow Links Tool allows you to tell Google to ignore specific backlinks for ranking purposes. The technical process is simple: You submit a document containing the linking pages or domains that you simply want to disavow via Google Search Console (GSC).
Why did Google create the Disavow Links Tool?
Google has fought spammy link-building for quite a decade. Its first plan to reduce link spam was the introduction of the “no follow” attribute in January 2023 which sought to combat comment spam like this:
While Google continued to regulate its algorithm in subsequent years, subsequent significant change targeting link schemes didn’t occur until 2023, when Google unrolled the primary Penguin algorithm.
Penguin was an “external filter” through which search results passed. That technical detail meant that an algorithmic penalty could persist for months after a radical site clean-up.
Google supplemented algorithmic penalties with Manual Actions, which is sent to webmasters if it “detected a pattern of unnatural artificial, deceptive, or manipulative outbound links.”
An entire site might be demoted even when a link scheme targeted a subsection or single page of an internet site.
The Disavow Links Tool, then, gave webmasters more control over the links that Google wont to rank—or potentially penalize—their site.
Even at its rollout in October 2012, Google believed the disavow tool applied to a limited number of webmasters:
What is Spam Score for a Website?
Spam Score does what it says on the tin; it’s a system developed by SEO data and software company Moz which attempts to work out how ‘spammy’ websites are and, subsequently, how trustworthy an internet site is (or is not). Sites are graded on a scale of 0 to 17, with 0 being the simplest (most trustworthy) and 17 being the worst (least trustworthy).

Of course, not all websites which are marked down as orange, or maybe red, are literally bad or spammy sites, but simply an unfortunate victim of circumstances in their title. Nevertheless, such websites should be treated with initial suspicion and examined intimately.

After all, as a business you wouldn’t want spammy websites linking to you, for fear that they’ll negatively affect your site’s backlink portfolio and, subsequently, organic visibility should your site be algorithmically penalized by Google or other search engines. Nor would you, as a writer, want your work to be related to such sites, because it could leave you with a nasty reputation within the eyes of future collaborators.
