Donald Trump Facebook accounts suspended

Facebook is suspending Donald Trump’s account for 2 years, the corporate has announced during a highly anticipated decision that follows months of debate over the previous president’s future on social media.

“Given the gravity of the circumstances that led to Mr Trump’s suspension, we believe his actions constituted a severe violation of our rules which merit the very best penalty available under the new enforcement protocols.

We are suspending his accounts for 2 years, effective from the date of the initial suspension on January 7 this year,” Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice-president of worldwide affairs, said during a statement on Friday.

He added that when the suspension was lifted, “a strict set of rapidly escalating sanctions” would be triggered if Trump violated Facebook policies.

Friday’s decision comes just weeks after input from the Facebook oversight board – an independent advisory committee of academics, media figures and former politicians – who recommended in early May that Trump’s account not be reinstated.

However the oversight board punted the last word decision on Trump’s fate back to Facebook itself, giving the corporate six months to form the ultimate call. The board said that Facebook’s “indeterminate and standard less penalty of indefinite suspension” for Trump was “not appropriate”, criticism that Clegg wrote the corporate “absolutely accept”.

The new policy allows for escalating penalties of suspensions for one month, six months, one year, and two years.
The former president has been suspended since January, following the deadly Capitol attack that saw a mob of Trump supporters storm Congress in an effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

The corporate suspended Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts over posts during which he seemed to praise the actions of the rioters, saying that his actions posed too great a risk to stay on the platform.

Facebook Announcements by banning Donald Trump Facebook Account

Facebook also announced that it might revoke its policy of treating speech by politicians as inherently newsworthy and exempt from enforcement of its content rules that ban, among other things, hate speech. the choice marks a serious reversal of a group of policies that Clegg and Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, once championed as crucial to democracy and free speech.

The company first created the newsworthiness exemption to its content rules in 2016, following international outcry over its decision to censor posts including the historic “napalm girl” photograph for violating its ban on nude images of youngsters . The new rule tacitly acknowledged the importance of editorial judgment in Facebook’s censorship decisions.

In 2019, at a speech at the Atlantic Festival in Washington DC, Clegg revealed that Facebook had decided to treat all speech by politicians as newsworthy, exempting it from content rules. “Would it’s acceptable to society at large to possess a personal company in effect become a self-appointed referee for everything that politicians say? I don’t believe it might be,” Clegg said at the time.

Why Facebook ban Donald Trump Facebook accounts?

Donald Trump Facebook accounts suspended: Under the new rules, Clegg wrote Friday, “when we assess content for newsworthiness, we’ll not treat content posted by politicians any differently from content posted by anyone else”.
The newsworthiness exemption is by no means the sole policy area during which Facebook treats politicians differently from other users. the corporate also exempts politicians’ speech from its third-party fact-checking and maintains an inventory of high-profile accounts that are exempted from the AI systems that Facebook relies on for enforcement of the many of its rules.
Facebook didn’t immediately answer questions on whether those policies remain in effect.

Facebook Accountability and Transparency

The Oversight Board’s decision is accountability in action. it’s a big check on Facebook’s power, and an authoritative way of publicly holding the corporate to account for its decisions. it had been established as an independent body to form binding judgments on a number of the foremost difficult content decisions Facebook makes, and to supply recommendations on how we will improve our policies.

As today’s announcements demonstrate, we take its recommendations seriously and that they can have a big impact on the composition and enforcement of Facebook’s policies.

Its response to the present case confirms our view that Facebook shouldn’t be making numerous decisions about content by ourselves. within the absence of frameworks prescribed by democratically accountable lawmakers, the board’s model of independent and thoughtful deliberation may be a strong one that ensures important decisions are made in as transparent and judicious a fashion as possible.

The Oversight Board isn’t a replacement for regulation, and that we still involve thoughtful regulation during this space.

We also are committing to being more transparent about the choices we make and the way they impact our users. also as our updated enforcement protocols, we also are publishing our strike system, in order that people know what actions our systems will take if they violate our policies. And earlier this year, we launched a feature called ‘account status’, so people can see when content was removed, why, and what the penalty was.

In response to a recommendation by the Oversight Board, we also are providing more information in our Transparency Center about our newsworthiness allowance and the way we apply it.

We allow certain content that’s newsworthy or important to the general public interest to stay on our platform — albeit it’d otherwise violate our Community Standards. We can also limit other enforcement consequences, like demotions, when it’s within the public interest to try to to so. When making these determinations, however, we’ll remove content if the danger of harm outweighs the general public interest.
